3 Reel Slots Generally a higher player advantage than 5-Reel machines as the odds of a winning combination occuring is higher with less reels, however all payouts are determined by the RNG and the preset (payout percentage) for that machine. Payouts are generally less than those offered on 5-Reel machines.
5 Reel Slots Generally a lower player advantage than 3-Reel machines as the odds of a winning combination occuring is lower with more reels, however all payouts are determined by the RNG and the preset (payout percentage) for that machine. Payouts are usually more than those offered on 3-Reel machines.
Action The amount of money risked by a player during a playing session.
Advantage This commonly refers to the edge (house edge) a casino has over a player on a given bet.
Attendant Button The attendant button is located near the cash-out button should you experience any difficulty whilst using the machine or require a payout on a machine that doesn't cash-out coins into the players coin tray.
Attendant Light When the attendant button is pressed a light located at the top of the machine illuminates (flashes), this is to make floor staff aware of a cash-out issue or machine malfunction. Also referred to as a candle.
Bankroll Refers to the available amount in which the player has to gamble.
Bet Also referred to as a wager, is used to described the action of a player that places money down in the hope of a favourable outcome.
Bet Amount An amount indicated on the machine as to how many credits are being played at any given time, generally from 1-10, however there are now machines that allow up to 200 credits to be gambled at one time.
Bet One To bet one machine credit at a time, for each reel spin.
Bet Max To bet the maximum amount of credits at a time (varies for each machines), for each reel spin. Betting Limit Each machine has an established minimum and maximum limit which can be wagered on one bet.
Cage The cashier's cage where you can buy or redeem chips or convert notes to coins and vice-versa..
Cash Out Button If a player wishes to collect winnings or cash-out his/her position, pressing the cash-out button returns players credits to the coin tray or in some cases prints a receipt that can be cashed at the cashier or cage.
Casino A place of business that houses a selection of gambling activities involving licensed games where players can wager on the outcome of the those games for potential profit.
Credit Amount Indicates the current amount of players credit available to gamble in the machine, this amount fluctuates as the spin button is pressed and the player either wins or looses.
Gambling Is an action a player takes when he risks an amount of money against the casino or game for a desired outcome.
Charles Fey Credited by many as the inventor of the original slot machines (one-armed bandit) produced back in 1887, later in 1891 Sittman and Pitt manufactured 5 drum machines which had similiar features of the machines today.
Coin or Note Slot Most slot machines will have two options for depositing money into the machine via either a coin slot (generally quarters) or note denominations from $1 and up.
Feng Shui An ancient Chinese practice of placement and arrangement of living space so as to achieve harmony with the environment. For many Chinese the position of a particular machine or the layout of the casino amongst other things can determine if a player will gamble at all, or if they choose to gamble and fortune doesn't come his/her way will blame the bad Feng Shui of the premises as the reason for them not winning.
House Edge Refers to the advantage that a casino has over a player.
Jackpot A win situation for a player, the jackpot amount varies on the winning combination produced by the RNG and the payout-schedule for that combination. A printed payout schedule is located on the front of the machine for the players reference.
Junket An organized group of gamblers, usually subsidized by a casino, that travel to the casino together to gamble.
Liberty Bell The name of the first 3-reel slot machine developed by Charles Fey. The machine name was derived from it's bell tone that would ring whenever a jackpot was won.
Lever The purpose of the lever (generally found on the right-hand side of most slot machines) these days is only for entertainment purposes as it does not produce a different result if the player uses the spin button. The original slot machines produced where mechanical and thus required the player to pull down on the lever to produce a winning or loosing outcome.
Linked Machines The purposes of linking machines is to offer players a large jackpot amount (higher than that achieve on a singular machine), each slot machine in the group contributes a small amount to the progressive jackpot amount, the amount continues to grow until it is won, if a player wins the jackpot, the jackpot amount is reset to the sole machine maximum payout figure.
Myths A belief or logic that has no real basis and many believe to be based on fact but is not true.
Odds Refers to the probability of an event in slots of a winning combination occurring.
One Armed Bandit A "slang" name given to the slot machine back in the 1940's given that the mob had significant interest in many casinos, it is still used today, as loosing money on slot machines is like being robbed.
Online Slots Online slot machines work in the same manner as slot machines that you'll find at any casino. The outcome of any winning or loosing combination is determined by the RNG. To play online slots for real money requires you to have an account with an online (internet) casino.
Payline Refers to a straight or even zig-zagged line that crosses through each symbol on the each reel in which the winning combination would be evaluated.
Payout Schedule The payout schedule is a table of winning combinations that is imprinted on the front of the slot machine should a given winning combination occur and the amount which will be award to the player at that time.
Payout Amount This refers to the maximum possible payout or jackpot a machine will pay given a favourable winning combination.
Player A term used to described a person who places bets (gambles) in casino or card room, also referred to as the customer.
Progressive Slots Played on slot machines that are linked together, the jackpot amount is much higher than stand-alone machine, the jackpot amount continues to rise until won and at that time all machines are reset to a jackpot minimum. Generally requires a maximum bet.
Prohibition A law that was impossed on gambling and in particular slot machines in California from 1911 to 1934, prohibition in the past has also been imposed on alcohol, transportation, exports and imports in many states and at many different times throughout America's history.
Random Number Generator All results of a reel spin and the position they come to rest is the result of a software program called a Random Number Generator (RNG) which is also referred to as "virtual reel" technology. The RNG generates random numbers constantly and only when the bet button or lever is pulled does the most recent randomly generated number is used, this means all results are totally random, and there are no tricks or secrets to winning at slots other than luck.
Reels Every slot machine has either 3-reels or 5-reels with symbol combinations imprinted, the winning combinations are randomly selected by the RNG.
Sitman and Pitt Released the first 5-reel machine in 1891, manufacturered in Brooklyn, New York.

Stop Loss A preset limit of the amount of money a player is prepared to lose before ceasing the game.
Symbols On the reels of slot machine symbols are imprinted which, given a winning or loosing combination produced by the RNG the results are displayed on those reels for player recreational purposes.
Table Games A name used to reference all the games in a casino which are played on a table, ie: blackjack, poker, craps, roulette, etc.
Theme Refers to the colour and overall imprinted design in the glass-front of the machine.
Wager Also referred to as a bet is used to described the action of a player that risks money in return for a favourable outcome in the game.
Win Amount An amount indicated on the machine as to how many credits have just been won on a given ree.
